Rebellion at Coyotepec

Artist (Mexican, 1965-)
CultureMexican
OriginSan Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico
Datec.2008
MediumEarthenware
DescriptionGroup of 139 black earthenware figures and features commemorating an event from the recent history of the artist's hometown, San Bartolo Coyotepec. After attempts to achieve justice in a case of police brutality failed, the inhabitants of the village, who are mainly Zapotec indians, gathered in the village square to assert their cultural strength and identity. As is typical in the artist's work, the people are depicted as skeletons, young and old, clustered around two symbols of official authority - the Church (symbolized by a cross) and the governement (symbolized by a bell).
